A study on the quality of life of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease undergoing Hemodialysis

Exploring the quality of life of patients diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) who are undergoing hemodialysis, focusing on their physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being.

Introduction

Hey there!

Our website is made for people living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are going through hemodialysis and for anyone who’s caring for them. It’s designed to be super simple, easy to navigate, and filled with practical stuff. You’ll find helpful tips and interventions you can actually do on your own, without needing a professionally trained healthcare personnel beside you. Whether it’s physical challenges, emotional struggles, social stuff, or even environmental adjustments, we’ve got something here that might help make things a little easier.

We just really want our patients and their loved ones to feel more empowered, in control and informed, even without a medical expert around 24/7.

Our Study

Everything on our website is based on a research study we conducted as 3rd year nursing students at Cebu Doctors’ University titled: “The Correlation Between Sociodemographic Factors Towards the Quality of Life of Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease Undergoing Hemodialysis: A Basis for Patient Support.”

Basically, we wanted to understand how a person’s background like their age, income, job, education, and other health conditions might affect how they experience life while on dialysis. We looked at four key areas of quality of life: physical, psychological, social, and environmental. The goal? To use what we learned to help patients feel better supported in everyday life.

Quality of Life

Quality of life (or QoL for short) is about more than just health it’s how someone feels in their day-to-day life. Are they comfortable? Happy? Able to do things they enjoy? For someone with CKD on hemodialysis, QoL covers how they manage symptoms, handle emotional ups and downs, stay connected with people, and adapt to changes in their environment. It’s a big picture kind of thing, and it really matters

Findings

  1. The exploration of sociodemographic factors and their relationship with QoL revealed that only a few factors showed significant correlations with QoL across various domains, while other factors still influenced patient outcomes. These findings highlighted the importance of an inclusive approach that addresses the broad influence of sociodemographic factors to improve QoL and care delivery.

  2. Individuals undergoing hemodialysis often face multiple challenges, including health complications, financial strain, and limited employment opportunities. Certain demographic factors, such as age, sex, education level, and income, appear to influence the experiences and outcomes of patients. These results underscore the importance of quality of life approaches in managing chronic illnesses like kidney disease.

  3. Quality of life score assessments across physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains showed that patients experienced varying levels of well-being, with some domains more impacted than others.

  4. Educational attainment and occupational status exhibited moderate correlations with higher scores in multiple domains, highlighting the importance of knowledge, employment, and social engagement. Other factors, such as age, sex, income, marital status, and comorbidities, showed weaker but still meaningful correlations.

Goals

The website aims to educate and equip CKD patients and their caretakers with knowledge and ample skills to manage CKD related reactions and symptoms without the presence of healthcare professionals or sophisticated medical equipment.

The website ensures that the interventions mentioned are evidence-based and are easy to follow by untrained individuals.
